Tallinn was known by its German name Reval for much of its recorded history which dates to 1154. Denmark first laid claim to the settlement in 1219. From the 14th to the 16th centuries, it became an important trading center as a member of the Hanseatic League. It was only in 1918 that the name “Reval” was dropped in favor of Tallinn, meaning Danish Town. Today, Tallinn has a population of approximately 438,000 residents amounting to one-third of Estonia’s total.
