Palmse Manor - 2003 (Palmse mõis)

Palmse Manor is located in the northern part of Estonia approximately 50 miles (80km) east of Tallinn and five miles (8km) inland from the Gulf of Finland.

It was first mentioned in historical records dating to 1287. However, construction of the “modern” complex was only started in the late 17th century. While famine, plague and war delayed its development it was substantially complete by the mid-18th century.

A primary source of income for the Manor was its vodka distillery, Tallinn being a major market for this product. By the end of the 19th century, Palmse Manor had achieved its largest size growing to encompass 38 square miles (10,000ha). In 1923 the Manor complex was divided into much smaller parcels.

Today, as a centerpiece of Lahemaa National Park, it is considered one of the best representations of Estonian manor-life during the 18th and 19th centuries.
