This category is a “catch-all” for three common sights around Old Town. First is the ubiquitous street lantern. These offer tourists an important sense of period-specific authenticity. And they’re cool to look at. The signage used by various souvenir stores, cafes and bars is also fun. Lastly, the free-standing chalkboards advertising menu items are especially common in and around Town Hall Square. The ones seen here display prices in Estonian currency (EEK). This was prior to 2011 when Estonia adopted the Euro.
During one of my early forays into Old Town – maybe even my first trip in ’99 – I heard familiar music spilling through an open doorway. It happened to be a favorite song by a popular English group. Glancing up, I saw the name of the establishment – DM Baar. Sure enough, the only music played here is by Depeche Mode. Every year brings new shops, cafes, bars and even a few new cobblestones to Old Town. But, one constant I always look forward to is hearing the namesake music wafting out DM Baar’s open door. I hope it’s still there the next time I go.
