In Estonian mythology, Kalev is a giant of a man who is renowned for his strength, intelligence and benevolence – particularly toward the Estonian people. It is said when he died he was buried within Toompea Hill. His wife Linda was so distraught she sat on a rock and cried, her tears forming Tallinn’s Ülemiste Lake.
So it is that Tallinn’s largest outdoor stadium takes the Kalev name. Kalevi Central Stadium was built in 1955 and seats about 12,000 spectators. Its principal tenant is Tallinn’s Kalev football (soccer) club.
It also hosts Estonia’s Dance Celebration, an important event occurring every five years in conjunction with the Estonian Song Festival. The photos presented in this category are from the afternoon and evening leading up to the first performance of the 2019 Dance Celebration.
