Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square) is located on Old Town’s southern end. It has gone by several names throughout its history, some more than once depending on which regime was in charge of Estonia at the time.
At one time, Freedom Square was a rather haphazard parking lot. In the late 2000s this area underwent a massive transformation making it into a place worthy of its important moniker.
It’s now a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike. It also serves as a proper entryway into Old Town via Harju street. Landmarks found on Freedom Square include St. John’s Church and the Monument to the War of Independence commemorating Estonia’s 1918-20 fight for liberty.
