The Sõrve Peninsula, on the island of Saaremaa, is approximately 20 miles (32km) in length and extends into the Irbe Strait with the Gulf of Riga to the southeast and the Baltic Sea to the west. Since 1646, a lighthouse has stood sentinel near the very tip of the Peninsula. During World War II, this area was the site of fierce battles between Germany and Russia. Among the casualties of 1944 was the lighthouse. A temporary replacement stood until 1960 when it was replaced by the current structure made of concrete standing 171 feet tall (52m).
