Rummu Quarry & Prison - 2015 (Rummu karjäär ja vangla)

Beginning in the 1930s, Rummu Quarry produced limestone mostly from labor provided by prisons conveniently located nearby. The water table in this area is relatively high, so pumps were required to allow the mine to function. Around the time of Estonia’s re-independence operations were ceased and the pumps turned off. Water quickly filled the quarry encompassing buildings and submerging equipment. Today, the lake offers a sense of tranquility while remnants of the mine provide a surreal visual. Recreational activities, however, are discouraged given the perils lurking just below the surface.
