Pirita Promenade is a popular 1.2 mile (2km) pathway along Tallinn’s waterfront where walkers, joggers, bikers and skaters can enjoy the expansive views while getting a little exercise. It was built in 1980 in conjunction with the Tallinn Olympic Yachting Centre in Pirita. The sailing competition could not be held in Moscow, so Tallinn was chosen as the most suitable location for these events.
Opposite Tallinn Bay, the Promenade passes Maarjamäe Memorial, the Song Festival Grounds and Kadriorg Park. The Russalka Memorial, erected in 1902, occupies a prominent location along the pathway. This sculpture honors the memory of crewman on the Russian warship Russalka which sank in 1893 on its way to Finland.
