Long Leg (Pikk jalg)

Pikk jalg (Long Leg) is a well-traveled part of Old Town dating back many centuries. The narrow cobblestone walkway connects lower Old Town with upper Old Town (aka Toompea).

For a lengthy stretch, it gives the pedestrian a feeling of walking through a large corridor. One side features a retaining wall built into the hill. The other side also has a wall, this one designed to separate lower Old Town from Toompea. A “gate” positioned at the bottom of the hill regulated entry back in the day.

Pikk jalg also has a partner, Lühike jalg (Short Leg). Located on the other side of the wall, it offers a shorter – albeit steeper – route to Toompea via a set of steps leading to a “gate” at the top of the hill.
