Old Town, Northwest Quarter (All-linna loodekvartal)

This is a section of Old Town is dubbed the “Northwest Quarter”. To my knowledge, the moniker does not formally exist among the local population or on any map. At 279 acres (113 ha), Tallinn’s Old Town area is fairly large. So, for the purposes of this project, it seemed appropriate to separate it into multiple categories. Therefore, “Northwest Quarter” it is.

By my definition, the Northwest Quarter principally consists of photos made on or around Gümnaasiumi, Kooli, Aida and Laboratooriumi Streets. This also includes adjacent park areas located outside the wall and long-range photos where the NWQ is the primary subject. This section continues to be one of my favorite parts of Old Town due to its relatively rough appearance. But, more and more, it seems this area is attracting new investment. So some of the rough edges and timeless charm are being replaced with a more polished “Old Town” look.

Nonetheless, it’s still a favorite for brides and their grooms. Kooli and Aida are “go to” spots for wedding photographers. This entourage is a common sight during summer months. Regular pedestrians are also typical. Of course, the Northwest Quarter also attracts its share of tourists which occasionally provide an interesting moment.
