Charles's Church & Luise Street (Kaarli kirik ja Luise tänav)

It’s believed this location hosted a place of worship since the 14th century. In the 17th century King Charles of Sweden commissioned a formal church for this site.

Since it was a wooden structure located outside the city wall, it was burned down during the Great Northern War in the early 18th century. The church in its present form was constructed in the latter half of the 19th century.

I’ve always admired the twin-tower symmetry of Charles’s Church and how the summer sunset turns the limestone facade into a polychromatic gold. It presents a formidable sight for the pedestrian walking up Luise street.
